Montserrat a wonderful place | A wonderful place: Montserrat | Montserrat: the beautiful mountain of barcelona
At around 45 mins from Barcelona, visiting Montserrat is a great day trip from Barcelona, and easily accessible. Montserrat means the serrated mountain, and is in itself a wonder to wonder. If you take the train from Barcelona, which leaves from Placa Espanya, then you will enjoy some lovely views - fundamentally flat, till all of a sudden a huge rock form juts up from the earth - here you have Montserrat. The train stops in Olessa de Montserrat - the small town at the foot of the mountain. From here you have 2 systems of transport to take you up to the mountain. First the “cremallera” or “zip train” takes you slowly up the incline - some 2400 feet. The train’s wheels are like toothed gears that run along a toothed track - just like a zip. Nevertheless by far the most spectacular method of transport is the wire automobile. Fantastic perspectives can be enjoyed from the cabin, including the breezy roads that licks it’s way up the mount, with coaches and autos admiring the views. This is a handy place to do Turismo Barcelona
At the very top is a catholic monastery - built in 1025 - and the primary attraction. There’s the attractive cathedral with the famous Black Madonna - discovered in a nearby cave. If you are fortunate or plan ahead, then you can also enjoy the choir singing their haunting tunes inside the cathedral. There are a number of walks along the breadth of the mountain-top - the Angel walk, the Santa Cova ( or holy cave, where the Black Madonna was found ), and all are easily reached and enjoyed at leisure. The priests also have installations like a self serviced cafe, gift shop and museum and are extraordinarily accommodating, though it’s worth considering that Catalan is their main language.
Montserrat’s history is totally full of interesting stories and anecdotes - diverse fires have raged and wrecked lots of the chapels and installations and interesting footage can be seen of the various catastrophes. There’s also a funicular train ( like a bus on a cable ) to take you to the very top where you can really wonder at the environment. As discussed, the majority of the encompassing area is flat, so the scope for perspectives and some amazing photographs are limitless. This place is near the terminales aeropuerto barcelona from where you can get simple
